It isn’t a game, it is a simulation of a situation in which life could exist, or rather, emerge. Observing how chaos and potentially life emerges is fun itself, but the most important part of what John Conway did with this simulation is that he wrote a mathematical proof that you can never create a formula to predict the outcome of the future within the simulation.
